Astronomer, Physicist, Philosopher, Teacher... all of these monikers apply to Galileo Galilei... history's "Father of Modern Science". He's famous for prolific use of his telescope to discover all sorts of phenomena, most notably Jupiter's four giant moons.
Galileo was also a strident rights activist, author, inventor and university drop-out. You'd think that being a drop-out would look bad on a resume but it didn't prevent Galileo from landing a faculty position at the University of Padua.
Galileo lived from 1564 - 1642, through the height of the European Renaissance. He worked, wrote, studied, lectured and researched prolifically. He rejected blind allegiance to authority and was very vocal in matters of science and to the separation of science from philosophy or religion. This ultimately landed him in hot water with religious authorities, as he was firmly committed to a model of the cosmos which saw the Earth orbiting the Sun and not the other way around.
Galileo's pivotal role in advancing science, together with his passionate defense of free thought has inspired the name of the new student lounge, theatre and gallery space in the Students' Union building food court. The space is designed for quiet reflection, reading, studying, art exhibitions, movies, small receptions or even speakers.
