Leadership Scholarship Named in Honour of Laurence Decore

The deadline for Nominations is March 1st annualy

The Government of Alberta is recognizing former provincial Liberal leader Laurence Decore by naming a scholarship in his honour. Alberta post-secondary students that demonstrate leadership and dedication within their institutions and communities can now share in the total of $50,000 to be allotted annually through the Laurence Decore Awards for Student Leadership.

"Laurence Decore was a true leader – a man who managed to hold both the esteem of his colleagues and the respect of his adversaries," said Premier Ralph Klein. "This scholarship is a fitting tribute to Laurence. Students awarded it should be very proud to be associated with a man who was so enthusiastic and so committed to public life."

The Laurence Decore Awards for Student Leadership will be awarded to 100 students each year, based on their commitment to student government, student societies, clubs or organizations. The recipients will be nominated by their peers and then selected by a committee at their post-secondary institution. The first awards will be issued in late March or early April of 2000.

"This award recognizes that being a student is being part of a larger learning community, " said Minister of Learning Dr. Lyle Oberg. "Student leaders are giving something of themselves to that community and the Government of Alberta recognizes that these accomplishments are important just like academic, athletic or creative excellence."

The Laurence Decore Awards for Student Leadership are funded and administered through the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund. Since its inception in 1981, the fund has awarded more than $185 million to over 134,000 Alberta students.
